I've done some exploration of a free structured-vector-graphics, Inkscape, and am thrilled with what it makes possible. Below are some examples and notes from my explorations.

Some of the images are also links to the actual svg code.

I hope to add more as time goes by.

(Note - Microsoft's Internet Explorer pre version 7 fails to accurately render the PNG image colors, while (recent versions, at least, of) Firefox and Opera both do fine. i recommend using the others, and not IE - for this and many other reasons...)

An emblem i made for an issue of Rob Bettemann's dance journal, Bourgeon. He suggested the conceptual design, Inkscape made adaptation from an elm-branch botanical diagram fairly easy, and i invested some effort to sweeten it. I'm proud of how it turned out, and Rob has taken it on as the journal's masthead logo.
