we had our first jam on october 29, 2006 in what is likely to be our new long-term residence, the parrish hall of st. james episcopal church on capital hill. see DC Sunday Contact Improv Jam for details. for posterity, and similar searches, see below for info we gathered during the effort.
Prospects We Were Exploring
during september and october of 2006 the sunday jam was floating, having abruptly lost our residence of six years due to university administrative changes. here are some options we investigated.
- St. James Church -
(as of oct 29, 2006, we're making arrangements to land here)
a small church on capital hill, the sunday jam happened in their parrish hall for several years, several years ago. ken hallucinated having heard the space might be available again (probably from misti french, another dc jammer), and roger investigated, discovering that to be so. roger's in talks with them about trying out the space with the possibility of a long-term arrangement.
the address is 222 8th St. NE, Washington, DC 20002
directions from eastern market station: http://tinyurl.com/fygyu
eastern market station is on the blue and orange lines, and the walk is around .7 miles.
directions to union station: http://tinyurl.com/yhhocp
union station is on the red line, and the walk is around .8 miles.
there is a flexible cost to the space that we need to resolve. we'll probably charge $5 to attend, negotiable if needs be.
- Dance Exchange
- ken has contacted them, and is asking about arranging to use the space for our sunday jam. they're being slow to respond, and from the experience of the people who arranged the thursday night jam, it may take a while. also, since they already have a contact jam there (started September 28, 2006, by dc-ci'ers john glenn, ilana silverstein, roger neece, and amanda abrams), there's a sense that they may feel they have enough contact improv already.
- Seeker's Church in Takoma Park
john peterson is checking with them
"It is directly across Carroll Ave from the Metro station. They have a beautiful space, with a wonderful wood floor." They have interplay groups, so are open to artsy movement stuff.
- American University Chapel Dance Studio
- the Chapel Dance Studio is an AU resource with which ginger and dan are acquainted. dav knows a student who runs the juggling club, may be able to help us get access to student resources. (someone said a student would need to be there to open the door, admit people.) beth lives nearby, and knows some people from the school, is going to investigate opportunities. leonard knows a professor who's into dance, may be able to help us get official access.
- The Center - 4321 Wisconsin Avenue, NW, 2nd Floor, Washington, DC 20016
amy taylor has checked on this, can get more info
(this place used to be called Synergy.)
a city gymn near tenley circle, run by someone who's been active in dc dance and creative expression (dodi). they have a $25/hour studio estimated to be slightly smaller than the marvin center one with which we're familiar (they also have a larger one, but occupied by exercise equipment), which amy is checking on. the space may be commonly used for weekend workshops, however, so may not be a prospect for ongoing use.
- Dance Place
- often has performances on the weekends, so probably not for ongoing. roger is going to check into this.
- Joy of Motion / Atlas Studios
need someone to investigate this one
is it metro accessible?
- Flashpoint
- dance space too small for our ongoing jam, might could be a fallback but it has an ongoing event during our regular time.
- National Cathedral Girls School
- anyone want to investigate this?
- The Great River Taoist Center
1325 18th Street NW, Suite 210 Washington, DC
this space is fairly easily available, so it's been our primary haven while we're without a long-term home. it turns out that the space has wall-to-wall carpets, which limits how you can dance considerably. parking is also difficult, also preventing some folks from attending. we've enjoyed our interim jams there surprisingly well, though, so it's a good possibility in a pinch, but it's not a viable long-term prospect for our jam.
the space costs $50 for the two hours, which we split among attendees. (we've generally had 9 or 10 attendees, and in all our discussions a number of people have spoken up with ability and willingness to pay larger shares of the cost. so don't be reluctant to attend if you what you can afford has a hard ceiling - we'll work that out.)
it is located on 18th street in northwest dc between Massachusettes avenue and N street. parking can be challenging, so consider trying the metro. it's a few blocks from the dupont circle metro - here's a yahoo map: http://tinyurl.com/gcn5v
(the space is actually closer to the dupont circle metro 19th street exit, which is slightly south of the circle on 19th street, rather the the Q street exit that's marked on the map.)
you'll need to enter the center's suite number, 210, on the call box to be buzzed in.
| [1] | this is almost exactly two months after our last jam at our prior residence, of six years, at GWU Dept. of Theatre and Dance' marvin center dance space. |
